This
year one of the topics we took on was Water. Therefore our Environmental Review
this year was a Water Questionnaire. We carefully thought of the questions and
the information we required and placed them on a sheet explaining about our
Green School project this year. This was sent home to all the parents/guardians
in the school for their completion and returned. When
we had received all the questionnaires back, Melissa McInerney, Darren Foran and
Niamh Dunphy from the Green School Committee came together with Sam Butler from
6th Class and tallied all of the answers. Melissa, Darren, Niamh and Sam then
processed all our results into tables and pie charts. Using
the information, we found that the families of Portlaw National School needed
to: Ø
TRY NOT TO LEAVE THE TAP RUNNING WHILE BRUSHING
THEIR TEETH Ø
TRY NOT TO BOIL MORE WATER THAN WE NEED WHEN
MAKING A CUP OF TEA Ø
TRY TO USE THE HALF LOAD SETTING ON OUR WASHNG
MACHINE Ø
REPAIR LEAKING TAPS IMMEDIATELY Ø
COLLECT RAINWATE Ø
TRY
TO HAVE LAGGING JACKETS ON THEIR CYLINDERS
Ø TRY
TO SHOWER RATHER THAN BATH. We
also looked closely at the water usage in the school and where improvements
could be made. We also compared some of the answers we received from our Energy
questionnaire in 2004 with our Water questionnaire. You can see improvements in
some very important areas which hopefully will save energy and water usage.
